Getting a DWI can feel overwhelming. Many people have questions about what happens next, how to get their license back, and what steps they need to take. At Breathe, LLC – A Center for Wellness, we help clients navigate the process every day. Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.
1. What happens after a DWI in North Carolina? After a DWI arrest, you may face court appearances, license consequences, fines, and requirements from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Most individuals will be required to complete a DWI assessment and any recommended education or treatment before becoming eligible for license restoration.
2. What is a DWI assessment?A DWI assessment is a state-required evaluation completed by a licensed provider. The assessment reviews factors such as:
  • Your driving history
  • Alcohol and drug use history
  • BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) at the time of arrest
  • Prior offenses
  • Risk factors related to substance use
The assessment determines whether education, treatment, or both are recommended.
3. How much does a DWI assessment cost in North Carolina? The state-set fee for a DWI assessment is currently $100. Additional fees may apply for treatment or education programs if they are recommended.
4. Can I complete my DWI assessment online?Yes. Many North Carolina providers, including Breathe, offer DWI assessments via Zoom. This allows clients to complete the assessment from the comfort of their home while meeting state requirements.
5. How long is my DWI assessment valid?A DWI assessment is valid for six months. If you do not begin or complete your recommended services within that time frame, you may need to complete a new assessment.
6. What classes will I have to take?Recommendations vary depending on the assessment results. Some common recommendations include:
ADETS (Alcohol Drug Education Traffic School)
  • 16 hours of education
  • Typically recommended for lower-risk cases
Short-Term Outpatient Treatment
  • Commonly 20 hours or more
  • Includes education, discussion, and recovery-focused content
Intensive Treatment
  • May be recommended for higher-risk situations or repeat offenses
7. How much do DWI classes cost?Costs vary depending on the number of hours required. At Breathe:
  • ADETS: $160 plus a $25 workbook
  • Programs over 16 hours: $25 per hour plus a $25 workbook
  • Payment plans may be available
8. Can I start classes before court?Yes. Many individuals choose to begin recommended services before their court date. However, every case is different, and you should discuss legal strategy with your attorney.
9. Do I need to complete treatment if my attorney says to wait? While some attorneys recommend waiting, it is important to remember that DWI assessments expire after six months. Delaying services too long may result in needing another assessment.
10. What is a 508 or E-508?The E-508 is the electronic certificate submitted to the state after you successfully complete all required education or treatment. The state reviews the submission before it is sent to the DMV for license restoration purposes.
11. How long does it take for the DMV to receive my completion? After services are completed:
  1. Your provider submits the E-508.
  2. DWI Services reviews and approves it.
  3. The approval is sent to the DMV.
The process can take several business days. Many clients are encouraged to contact DMV Raleigh before going to their local DMV office.
12. What if I live in another state? If your DWI occurred in North Carolina but you live elsewhere, you may be able to complete treatment in your home state. Your documents can then be reviewed and submitted to North Carolina for processing. Requirements vary depending on your circumstances.
13. Can I get my license back immediately after finishing classes? Not always. Completing classes is only one step. The DMV must also process your documentation, and there may be additional requirements such as:
  • Paying restoration fees
  • Satisfying court requirements
  • Completing ignition interlock requirements if applicable
14. What if I miss a class?North Carolina has strict attendance requirements. Missed classes may need to be made up, and excessive absences can delay completion. Arriving late may also affect attendance credit.
15. Can I drink while taking DWI classes?Clients are expected to comply with program requirements. Depending on recommendations, random drug or alcohol screening may be required. Substance use during treatment can affect progress and recommendations.
16. How do I get started? The first step is scheduling your DWI assessment. Once completed, you'll receive recommendations and a plan tailored to your situation.
