Losing your driver’s license due to a DWI (Driving While Impaired) conviction can be a challenging experience. However, once you’ve completed the necessary assessments and classes, you can take steps to restore your driving privileges. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process in North Carolina.
Step 1: Complete the Required Assessment and Classes
The first step towards getting your license back is to complete a substance use assessment. This assessment must be conducted in person by an authorized DWI provider. During the assessment, you’ll need to bring your court papers and a copy of your complete driving history from the DMV.
Based on the assessment, you may be required to complete an education program or a treatment program. The Alcohol Drug Education Traffic School (ADETS) is an educational program for individuals without a diagnosed substance use disorder but who may be at risk. If you are diagnosed with a substance use disorder, you will need to complete the recommended treatment program.
Step 2: Submit the Completion Certificate
Once you’ve completed the required assessment and classes, the provider will submit a Certificate of Completion (e-508 form) to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV). This form is crucial as it verifies that you have met all the necessary requirements.
Step 3: Pay the Required Fees
To restore your driving privileges, you will need to pay several fees, including a restoration fee, a service fee, and, if applicable, a DWI reinstatement fee. These fees can be paid online using MoneyGram or in person at any MoneyGram location. It’s important to confirm the amount due before making a payment.
Step 4: Reapply for Your Driver’s License
After paying the required fees and ensuring that your Certificate of Completion has been submitted, you can reapply for your driver’s license. This can be done at any NCDMV driver license office. It’s recommended to make an appointment online to avoid long wait times.
Step 5: Stay Informed and Compliant
Throughout this process, it’s essential to stay informed about any additional requirements or changes in the law. Regularly check the NCDMV website or contact their office for the most up-to-date information.
