If you’ve recently received a DWI in North Carolina, the process of getting your license back can feel overwhelming. You’re not alone — and we’re here to help.

At Breathe, we walk with you every step of the way to make the path forward feel a little clearer, a little calmer, and a lot more manageable. Here’s everything you need to know to restore your license with confidence.

Step 1: Know What the DMV Requires

To restore your license after a DWI, North Carolina DMV requires the following:

  • A DWI Assessment completed by a licensed provider
  • Completion of your recommended classes or treatment
  • Proof of completion sent to NC DWI Services
  • Form 508 completed by your provider and submitted
  • Your conviction date must be on file
  • Your driving record will need to be reviewed
  • Any DMV fees or fines must be paid
  • If you live out of state, a treatment review is also required

Step 2: Schedule Your DWI Assessment

You can book your DWI assessment online or by calling us at 704-782-3050.

Before your appointment, gather these documents:

  • Citation or ticket
  • Breathalyzer results
  • Conviction date (if known)
  • Photo ID
  • Any previous treatment documentation (if applicable)

Step 3: Complete the Required Program

Your assessment determines which program you’re eligible for. Here’s a breakdown of what’s possible:

 ADETS (16 Hours)

This is an educational program for first-time offenders who:

  • Blew under 0.15 BAC
  • Have no substance use disorder diagnosis
  • Have no prior DWI history or significant risk factors

It’s important to note that ADETS is not treatment—it’s education. Many clients are relieved to know this is an option if they meet criteria.

Other Programs Include:

  • Short-Term Treatment (20–39 hours)
  • Long-Term Treatment (40–89 hours)
  • 90-Hour Program for higher risk or repeat offenses

We offer all programs online via Zoom, including evening and weekend options.

Step 4: Let Us Handle the Paperwork

Once you complete your classes, Breathe will:

  • Submit your Form 508 to NC DWI Services
  • Send your proof of completion to the state
  • Coordinate with other states if your case is out-of-state

You don’t need to worry about the fine print — we’ve got it covered.

 Step 5: Regain Your License

After all requirements are met:

  • DMV will process your paperwork
  • You’ll pay any remaining fees
  • You can begin the process of reinstating your license

We’re also here if you’d like to continue therapy or ongoing recovery support beyond the DWI process.
