Driving While Impaired (DWI) is a serious offense with far-reaching consequences. Understanding these consequences and the process of getting a DWI assessment can help individuals navigate this challenging time and take steps toward recovery. At Breathe the Center for Wellness, we are committed to providing compassionate and comprehensive support to those affected by DWIs.
The Consequences of a DWI
A DWI conviction can have significant legal, financial, and personal repercussions:
1.      Legal Penalties: These can include fines, community service, probation, and even jail time, depending on the severity of the offense and whether it is a repeat offense1.
2.      License Suspension: A DWI often results in the suspension or revocation of your driver’s license, which can impact your ability to work and fulfill daily responsibilities2.
3.      Financial Costs: Beyond fines, there are additional costs such as legal fees, increased insurance premiums, and fees for mandatory education or treatment programs3.
4.      Personal and Professional Impact: A DWI can strain personal relationships and affect your professional life, potentially leading to job loss or difficulty finding employment4.
The DWI Assessment Process
If you are convicted of a DWI, you will need to undergo a DWI assessment. This process is designed to evaluate your substance use and determine the appropriate level of intervention:
1.      Initial Assessment: Conducted by a certified DWI provider, this assessment involves a detailed interview about your substance use history, criminal history, and driving record5.
2.      Documentation: You will need to bring court papers and a complete driving history from the DMV to the assessment.
3.      Evaluation Criteria: The assessment follows the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria to determine your needs. Based on the results, you may be referred to an education program or a treatment program5.
How Breathe the Center for Wellness Can Help
At Breathe the Center for Wellness, we offer a range of services to support individuals through the DWI assessment process and beyond:
1.      Comprehensive Assessments: Our certified counselors conduct thorough assessments to understand your unique situation and needs.
2.      Education Programs: For those without a diagnosed substance use disorder, we offer the Alcohol Drug Education Traffic School (ADETS) program, which focuses on prevention and education.
3.      Treatment Programs: For individuals requiring more intensive support, we provide both short-term and long-term outpatient treatment options. Our programs are designed to help you develop coping mechanisms, manage cravings, and prevent relapse.
4.      Supportive Environment: We create a caring and safe environment where you can explore the issues affecting your life and work towards recovery. Our team is dedicated to providing nonjudgmental and empathetic care.
Navigating the aftermath of a DWI can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to do it alone. At Breathe the Center for Wellness, we are here to support you every step of the way.
